In this post, we’ll cover some questions that we’re asked about UKAS Calibration of sound level meters and acoustic calibrators.

If you have any questions or if you’d like a quote for calibration, please do get in touch and we’ll be pleased to help.

UKAS Calibration of Sound Level Meters

Cirrus can offer a range of calibration services for your sound level meters or noise measurement instruments (such as noise nuisance recorders) and these are classified into two types: Traceable and Accredited.

We can offer both types for your equipment and which you need is often determined by any standards, regulations or guidelines that you are working to. There may be a requirement for you to use equipment that carried a valid calibration certificate that is Traceable but there may also be a requirement that the calibration certificate has been issued by a UKAS-accredited laboratory.

Cirrus can offer you both types and we will be happy to provide you with a detailed, competitive quotation that meets your need. We can also offer Traceable or UKAS calibration on a wide range of noise measurement instruments from other manufacturers so please do get in touch and let us know what equipment you have and what level of calibration you need.

UKAS Calibration of Acoustic Calibrators

The calibration and verification of acoustic calibrators is just as important as that for the sound level meter is it to be used with. If you need to have your acoustic calibrator or calibrators verified with a service that is UKAS accredited, Cirrus can help.

Where a UKAS calibration is not required. we can also offer traceable calibration for acoustic calibrators from any manufacturer. Let us know the type of acoustic calibrator, whether you need UKAS or traceable calibration, and if there is more than one level, what you would like calibrated.

We’ll give you a detailed, competitive quotation that delivers you the level of calibration or verification that meets your needs. Just get in touch and we’ll be pleased to help.

Calibration to BS EN 61672-3/IEC 61672-3

If you are working to a specific standard, regulation or guideline, it may specify that the equipment being used should be calibrated in accordance with BS EN 61672-3 (or maybe IEC 61672-3). This in itself is not an accredited calibration but is a set of tests that should be carried out when undertaking periodic verification.

These tests can be carried out by a calibration laboratory that is or is not UKAS accredited. However, it should be used as a minimum set of tests for a sound level meter that has been designed to meet the BS EN 61672-1/IEC 61672-1 standard and more so if that instrument has been Type Approved to BS EN 61672-2/IEC 61672-2.

If you have any questions about the tests that should be carried out when a sound level meter is calibrated, please do get in touch and we will be pleased to offer any advice or assistance that you may need.

Calibration to BS 7580 Part 1:1997

There are some older measurement standards and guidelines that still reference calibration to BS 7580 Part 1:1997 and whilst this has been, in the main, superseded by IEC 61672-3, it is still possible to have instruments calibrated to this standard.

If your sound level meter was designed to meet the older instrumentation standards such as BS EN 60651 and/or BS EN 60804 (and variants of these) and was a Type 1 instrument, we can offer a calibration that is traceable to National Standards.

Please get in touch and let us know what equipment you have and we can offer you a competitive, detailed quotation.

Calibration of vibration meters and measurement equipment

We can also offer calibration of vibration meters in accordance with BS EN ISO 8041/A.1

If you have any hand-arm or whole-body vibration measurement equipment that needs to be calibrated, please get in touch and we will be pleased to help.
