Down in the tube station at midnight – but not buskers.

New measures are coming into force this month aimed at clamping down on noise nuisance caused by over enthusiastic buskers around London’s Shepherd’s Bush Tube station.

The Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) will restrict loud public performances and the use of amplifiers for music and public speaking as from June 23. Breaking the order could lead to a £100 fixed penalty notice or maximum fine of £1,000.

The move by Hammersmith and Fulham Council follows a consultation with locals who complained of persistent noises. The PSPO will stop loud music, busking and amplified public speaking near the tube after 6pm. Head of transport, environment and residents’ services at the council Wesley Harcourt said: “We applaud and welcome creative and artistic entertainment in our borough, however there is a very real noise problem for residents living close nearby when loud amplifiers are used in this location.”

A Borough-wide consultation is now being looked at later this summer to busking to try and get the balance right between artistic licence whilst protecting residents and businesses.
