SoundSign the world’€™s first noise activated warning sign for Hospitals

Cirrus Research, the UK company which specialises in the design and development of noise measurement equipment for health and safety applications, has unveiled SoundSign, it’€™s new electronic noise activated warning sign for Hospitals.

Noise levels in hospitals have become a hot topic in the last few years. As one of the biggest complaints in patient satisfaction surveys, high noise levels can reduce the overall rating of a hospital. Apart from this, studies have shown that patients exposed to continuous extraneous noise can experience altered memory, increased agitation, less tolerance for pain, feelings of isolation and sleep deprivation.

In addition, sudden noises, such as a dropped tray or slammed door, cause a startle reflex€ in some patients, resulting in physiological responses including muscular flexion, increased blood pressure, higher respiratory rate, increased heart rate, and vaso-constriction.

Perfect for a hospital setting, SoundSign is a mobile, highly visible noise activated warning sign, which has been designed for use in environments where there is a need to warn or indicate when a designated noise level is exceeded.

James Tingay, Group Marketing Manager for Cirrus Research explains:

€œSoundSign can help reduce noise levels from staff, whilst simultaneously improving a patients hospital experience. The product has already found favour in schools, factories, office spaces and pubs across Europe.

He went on to say€¦

Just like the cameras in residential areas that inform motorists that they are breaking the speed limit, the sound sign can be used in wards and corridors, to inform staff and patients when acceptable noise levels are exceeded and identifying noise hotspots. By making both parties aware of high noise levels, staff can take appropriate action, from informing hospital administrators, to checking and adjusting monitors to avoid unnecessary alarms.

Up to three Remote Display Units can be quickly and simply connected to the Master Unit, mirroring the action and information of the controlling SoundSign. This could be in a nurses station or staff area, enabling a quick response should it be necessary.

Cirrus Research plc has over 30 years experience of the design and manufacture of noise measurement instruments and is accredited to ISO 9001:2008. During that time, the company has developed a reputation for producing robust, practical equipment which can perform in real situations. All Cirrus equipment is made in the UK and the company is responsible for all after sales service and calibration work. Spare parts and support are therefore always available.
