Applications: Machinery Noise Measurement

The measurement of noise levels from machinery may fall into to area of Occupational Noise, but there may also be a need to measure and certify the noise levels generated by machinery.

EU Directives require that any machinery used outdoors is marked with as meeting the appropriate standard and that the Sound Power of the equipment is marked onto the equipment

The EU Directive on Noise Emission by Outdoor Equipment:

  • Involves 57 types of equipment for use outdoors, ranging from construction machinery to lawnmowers
  • Demands declarations from manufacturers on the 'guaranteed' sound-power levels of their products before they can be marketed in the EU
  • Affects manufacturers that market products in EU countries

The Sound Power levels of the equipment has to be declared, and quality-control procedures established to make sure of continued compliance with the new legislation. On the January 3rd, 2002, the Directive became mandatory. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in products being prohibited from the EU marketplace.
