Motorsport Noise Measurement

Our noise measurement instruments are used at high profile circuits and venues around the world, helping owners, operators, teams and officials comply with noise limits and regulations.

With a range of noise measurement tools including drive-by test systems with permanently installed and portable monitors for continuous measurement of vehicles, to handheld sound level meters for pre and post race scrutineering, we can help you monitor and control your noise levels on track, in the pits and in the surrounding environment. We can also help you measure the noise exposure of your employees to make sure that they are not at risk from hearing damage.

The three main motorsport areas that Cirrus has supplied are:

> Drive-by Noise Measurement Systems for Real-Time Noise Control
> Sound Level Meters for Scrutineering
> Noise Dosemeters & Sound Level Meters for Health & Safety Noise Measurements

Cirrus has supplied noise measurement instruments to a wide range of customers in a number of different arenas of motorsport including:

> MSA, FIM & FIA Scrutineers
> Clubs & Associations
> Manufacturers & Designers
> Series Organisers & Bodies
> Circuit Operators & Owners
> Race Teams
> Corporate Motorsport Venues

Drive-by Noise Measurement Systems for Real-Time Noise Control

Drive-by noise measurement systems are becoming increasingly useful as more circuits are required to monitor, measure and control their noise output into the surrounding environment. Static testing of vehicles will often identify those which are well over the limit but it is often the case that rear engined cars may fail static testing whilst being amongst the quiest on the track, and vice versa for front engined cars.

Drive-by measurements can give a circuit a real time display of the noise produced by vehicles passing the test point which in many cases will identify those which will cause compliants to be raised. Systems can also be provided to automatically measure and record exceedences of preset noise limits providing circuit operators and enforcement bodies with an accurate measurement of the noise of individual vehicles.

Cirrus has a range of noise monitors and software packages that can be used in this environment and these systems can be configured and customised to meet the requirements of a particular circuit or venue. Sound Level Meters for Scrutineering

Where a drive-by system is not required, Handheld Sound Level Meters can be used to take static noise readings of cars and bikes to ensure compliance with any regulations in place. Cirrus has a range of systems and Sound Level Meters suitable for these applications including the new CR:261S Vehicle Noise Sound Level Meter.

In addition to this, our range of sound level meters that have been designed for Health & Safety applications can also be used for vehicle noise testing. For simple measurements, the CR:306 Sound Level Meter can be used. This instrument meets the latest standards for sound level meters, IEC 61672, whilst being simple to operate.

Noise Dosemeters & Sound Level Meters for Health & Safety Noise Measurements

Motorsport is often a noisy activity and depending upon the type of vehicles concerned, the levels of noise can often be above those considered safe for long term exposure.

Although visitors and spectators are not covered by Noise at Work or Occupational Noise regulations, all employers should be aware of, and where noise levels are excessive, taking action to protect their employees from the risk of hearing damage. Under the EU Directive all employers who are legally based in EU Member countries are required to undertake risk assessments and noise measurements to ensure that their employees are not exposed to damaging noise levels.

For many years Cirrus has provided noise measurement equipment to the motorsport industry that is used to help employers meet these legal requirements.

Our doseBadge Noise Dosemeter is the ideal tool for this type of measurement and assessment as it is small, lightweight and rugged. We would also recommend our Safety Officer's Noise Measurement Kits which combine both a Sound Level Meter (which can be used for vehicle noise testing) as well as a set of doseBadge Noise Dosemeters.
